Lip Flip Treatment: How It Works, Cost, Risks and Results

If your upper lip seems to tuck inward when you smile, you may be curious about a lip flip. This injectable treatment can make more of the upper lip visible without adding filler. The change is usually subtle, temporary, and dependent on your anatomy.

A lip flip changes muscle activity; lip filler adds volume. Understanding that distinction helps you choose a treatment that fits your goals rather than expecting two different procedures to do the same job.

At Elite Laser Center & Med Spa in Stony Brook, a consultation is the place to discuss your concerns, review injectable options, and determine whether a proposed treatment is appropriate.

What Is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip uses small injections of a botulinum toxin product, such as Botox/Dysport, to relax part of the muscle surrounding the mouth, called the orbicularis oris. Reducing its inward pull may allow the upper lip to turn slightly outward, showing more of the pink lip surface.

It does not physically increase lip volume, permanently reshape the lips, or replace a surgical lip lift. Someone seeking substantially fuller lips may need a different discussion from someone whose upper lip becomes less visible when smiling.

A 2025 systematic review of lip-flip treatments found encouraging reported outcomes but included only seven eligible articles. That limited evidence base supports careful counseling rather than promises of a particular look.

Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler

ConsiderationLip flipLip filler
ApproachRelaxes selected muscle activityAdds material to enhance volume, shape, or support
Added volumeNoYes
Possible goalA subtle increase in visible upper lipFullness, contour, or selected asymmetries
DurationTemporary; generally measured in monthsTemporary; varies by product, placement, and person
Important tradeoffCan temporarily affect lip controlHas separate risks, including vascular complications

Neither treatment is automatically more natural-looking. Results depend on selection, technique, and how well the plan matches your face. Combining treatments may be considered in selected cases, but more treatment is not necessarily better.

Who Might Consider a Lip Flip?

A lip flip may be worth discussing if you want a modest change in upper-lip visibility and understand that it will not create substantial fullness. Your provider should assess your lips at rest and while you smile, speak, and purse them.

Tell your provider if precise lip control matters for singing, playing a wind instrument, public speaking, or other activities. A change that looks small in a photograph can still affect how your mouth feels or functions.

What to Share Before Treatment

Disclose medications, supplements, allergies, previous injectable treatments, cold sores, and any history of swallowing, breathing, or neuromuscular problems. Mention pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, or breastfeeding, as safety information is limited and elective treatment may be deferred.

An active infection at a proposed injection site is a contraindication to BOTOX Cosmetic. An active cold sore or other local irritation also needs assessment before proceeding. Do not stop prescribed medication without guidance from the prescribing clinician.

Is a Lip Flip FDA-Approved?

Using Botox/Dysport for a lip flip is off-label. Neither product is FDA-approved specifically for a lip flip. This use should not be advertised as an FDA-approved lip-flip procedure.

Your provider should explain the proposed product, benefits, uncertainties, and risks before you consent. Botulinum toxin products have different formulations; their units are not interchangeable. Botox and Dysport units cannot be substituted one-for-one; dosing must be specific to the selected product.

See the BOTOX Cosmetic prescribing information for product-specific warnings and approved uses.

What Happens at the Appointment?

The consultation should come first. Your provider reviews your goals and health history, examines facial movement, and discusses alternatives. If treatment is appropriate and you decide to proceed, the skin is cleaned and small injections are placed according to an individualized plan.

The injection portion is usually brief, but allow time for assessment, consent, questions, and aftercare. The lips are sensitive, so a quick procedure should not be confused with a painless one. Ask about comfort measures and how follow-up will be handled.

When Will You See Results, and How Long Do They Last?

A lip flip is not an instant result. Changes develop over several days, and it is sensible to allow roughly one to two weeks before assessing the settled effect with your provider.

The effect usually lasts a few months. Around two to three months is a commonly discussed estimate, although duration can be shorter or longer. Avoid treating a specific timeline as a guarantee or scheduling repeat injections without reassessment.

Temporary does not mean immediately reversible. There is no routine dissolving treatment that switches off a lip flip. If you dislike the effect or experience weakness, you may need to wait for it to wear off while following clinical advice. This is one reason to avoid trying it for the first time just before an important event.

Lip Flip Side Effects and Risks

Possible effects include tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising, and an uneven or unwanted cosmetic result. Relaxing the muscle can also make lip control feel different.

  • Drinking through a straw or keeping a firm lip seal may be harder.

  • Whistling, pursing the lips, or pronouncing certain sounds may feel different.

  • Some people notice drooling, dribbling, or changes when eating and drinking.

  • Your smile may look or feel different from what you expected.

These effects may improve as the treatment wears off, but tell your provider about bothersome symptoms rather than assuming you must manage them alone.

When to Seek Medical Help

Contact your provider promptly about worsening pain, spreading redness, signs of infection, or concerning changes in lip function. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Botulinum toxin labeling includes warnings about potentially serious effects beyond the injection area.

Aftercare and Follow-Up

Follow your treating provider's written instructions. Ask when to resume exercise, pressure or massage around the mouth, and your usual lip products. If drinking through a straw feels difficult, avoid forcing the movement and ask for advice.

Attend the recommended review and allow the initial effect to develop before discussing any additional treatment. More product is not automatically the solution to an uneven appearance or a result that feels unfamiliar.

How Much Does a Lip Flip Cost?

There is no universal price. Charges depend on the product, treatment plan, provider, and whether the practice uses a minimum treatment fee or includes a follow-up visit.

We do not present an online national estimate as Elite's price. Request an individual quote before treatment, including what the fee covers and whether any later assessment or adjustment would involve an additional charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a lip flip make my lips bigger?

It may make more of the upper lip visible, but it does not add volume. If fullness is your main goal, ask whether lip filler or another option is more suitable.

Can I reverse a lip flip if I dislike it?

There is no routine dissolving treatment for a lip flip. The effect generally needs to wear off. Contact your provider if the result or changes in lip function concern you.

Can it affect drinking or speaking?

Yes. Temporary weakness can affect straw use, lip closure, whistling, or certain sounds. Discuss work, hobbies, and existing functional concerns before treatment.

Is a lip flip the same as a surgical lip lift?

No. A lip flip temporarily changes muscle activity. A surgical lip lift changes tissue position through surgery and has a different recovery and risk profile.
